Continuities & Continuums was curated as part of the exhibition Realities Left Vacant (Layla Burger-Lichtenstein & Arkadij Koscheew, Neue Berliner Kunstverein, Berlin) featuring works made by the recipients of the 2022 Arbeits Stipendium from the Berlin Senat für Kultur und Europa. This series of collage based works explores axes of climate change, creyolisaiton, spirituality, and futurisms. During the working period Isaiah Lopaz researched and engaged in large format image making, digital imaging, singing and electronic music production, African and Afro-Diasporic spiritual practices, and the Ojibwe language. In large scale-collage works on canvas, Lopaz combines Anishinaabe and Akan sacred stories of creation and catastrophe. In a stand alone digital collage work printed on cotton, African American symbols are evoked and imagined as relics from earth, cherished in interstellar African diasporas.
