We Returned the Burdens that We Bore Having Realised We Never Owed Them a Thing
Commissioned for Republik Repair (Karina Griffith, Ballhaus Naunynstrasse, Berlin), a festival centred around reparatory imaginings, this series of collages positions reparations as a necessary component of justice, integral to dismantling racial constructs, racial hierarchies, and racial violence. Figures in these works are aware that continuities of racism have stretched across centuries, and that processes of repair require not only consensus and collective work, but time. It took hundreds of years to arrive at this present moment, it may take hundreds of years to undo what was done. These works ask what could we move towards and what could we transform into?
