Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Him charts the movement of racist constructs and racial frameworks in speech and language, mapping the collision of racist ideologies across the lived experiences of Black people. Originally comprised of photographs, text, and hand printed t-shirts, this series documents Isaiah Lopaz’ experiences with racism and anti-Blackness in Berlin. Initially presented through a blog titled Him Noir, Things You Can Tell Just By Looking at Him was exhibited internationally through various processes of media engagement and publication. Photographs from this series were published across print, video, digital, and audio media in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Austria, Switzerland, Brazil, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the U.S.A. Positioning publication as a method of exhibition, allowed Lopaz to examine first hand how the media functions as an agent of socialisation, influencing understandings and framings of race and racism across time and locality. Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Him has transformed into a series of transdisciplinary, interconnected works including installations, performances, discussions, workshops, video, and academic discourse.
